Abstract

In order to establish an objective method of evaluating ladies’ garment fabrics by connecting the mechanical properties of ladies’ garment fabrics to subjective evaluation, subjective assessments were examined by judges who work at textile mills or in the textile trade. We examined a method of deriving objective equations, a total hand value (THV) equation and a total appearance value (TAV) equation. The THV equation was derived directly from the mechanical properties of the fabrics and the TAV equation was derived from three mechanical parameters which are related to the beauty of garment appearance. In the case of the THV objective equation, the accuracy of regression was high within the same groups of judges; however, in the case of the TAV objective equation, accuracy was slightly low. Because there were few subjects and that caused deviation, the accuracy of prediction was slightly low; however, the objective evaluation was adequate.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to produce yarns from three different spinning techniques, i.e.Murata Vortex Spinning (MVS) ring spinning and rotor spinning. Those yarns were then used to produce fabrics. Then, the effect of silicone softener on tactile comfort of fabric was investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Three different yarns, i.e. Ring, Rotor and MVS yarns, were used to make fabrics using CCI sample loom which were then subjected to post treatments like desizing, scouring and bleaching. After the completion of the dyeing process, silicone-based softener was used to improve the hand feel of fabrics. The structures of three yarns were evaluated using Scanning electron microscopy. The fabrics were evaluated against compression, bending and surface properties using Kawabata evaluation system.

Findings

The fabric made of MVS yarn depicted more geometrical roughness, coefficient of friction and bending rigidity but less compressibility as compared to fabrics made with other yarns. It was observed that softener concentration has a direct relationship with thickness and bending rigidity of the fabric, and inverse relationship with coefficient of friction and geometrical roughness of the fabric.

Originality/value

MVS yarn has some superior properties over rotor and ring spun yarn like high production rates, high resistance to pilling, clear appearance and stability against deformation but has disadvantage that it has less compressibility. Therefore, softener is applied on the fabric, to address this issue, so that it could also be used for apparels application.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a generic approach that prevents a specific class of code injection attacks (CIAs) in a novel way.

Design/methodology/approach

To defend against CIAs this approach involves detecting attacks by using location‐specific signatures to validate code statements. The signatures are unique identifiers that represent specific characteristics of a statement's execution. The key property that differentiates the scheme presented in this paper is that these characteristics do not depend entirely on the code statement, but also take into account elements from its execution context.

Findings

The approach was applied successfully to defend against attacks targeting structured query language (SQL), XML Path Language and JavaScript with positive results.

Originality/value

Despite many countermeasures that have been proposed the number of CIAs has been increasing. Malicious users seem to find new ways to introduce compromised embedded executable code to applications by using a variety of languages and techniques. Hence, a generic approach that defends against such attacks would be a useful countermeasure. This approach can defend attacks that involve both domain‐specific languages (e.g. SQL) and general purpose languages (e.g. JavaScript) and can be used both against client‐side and server‐side attacks.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report upon high power, internally matched GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) at Ku band with 1.5 GHz bandwidth, which employ a simple and cost‐effective lossless compensated matching technique.

Design/methodology/approach

Two 4 mm gate periphery GaN HEMTs are parallel combined and internally matched with multi‐section reactive impedance transformers at the input and output networks. The output matching network is designed at the upper frequency of the design band for a flat power of the circuit, while the input matching network is designed at the upper frequency for a flat gain.

Findings

With the reactively compensated matching technique, the internally matched GaN HEMTs exhibit a flat saturated output power of 43.2+0.7 dBm and an average power added efficiency of 15 per cent over 12 to 13.5 GHz.

Originality/value

This paper provides useful information for the internally matched GaN HEMTs.

Abstract

Purpose

Lack of good post‐harvest storage of cocoa pods has been responsible for the low commercial quality of cocoa beans. This study aims to evaluate the effect of modified packaging and storage time of cocoa pods on the corresponding commercial qualities of cocoa beans.

Design/methodology/approach

Preweighed cocoa pods obtained from the experimental station of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan, Nigeria were stored under three modified packaging conditions, namely: black non transparent polythene film (BNTPEF), transparent polythene film (TPEF) and NA (normal atmosphere environment).

Findings

The study found that there was a rise in the mean temperatures of samples in all the storage environments up to the 12th day of storage, after which the mean temperature declined until the end of the storage period. Cocoa butter fat, bean weights, severity of decay and mould growths depended on the type of packaging and storage time.

Originality/value

At p<0.05 the use of modified packaging of cocoa pods significantly affects the commercial values of the beans. The best of these qualities was conserved in the TPEF.
